Our Web Design Process

Phase One - Exploration

At Wizardworks, the web design process is built upon a foundation of transparency, collaboration and communication. In order to get an initial understanding of our client's business and goals, we begin by offering potential clients the oppourtunity to fill out a thought provoking questionnaire. This provides Wizardworks with a basic understanding of what our clients wish to achieve. After forming an initial approach, and if possible, we'll meet in person to engage in a more active learning process. By placing importance on our client's goals, we can effectively determine their needs and at this point suggest ways we can create the optimal website for their business. It is also important for us to gain an understanding of our client's users/visitors/customers. Some key questions we ask our clients during this process include:

  • What do your visitors/clients expect from you?
  • How do you currently communicate with your site visitors/clients?
  • What major goals are you trying to accomplish with your website, and what goals do you intend to accomplish in the future?
  • Are there any special features you would like to incorporate into the site?
  • Which types of content are important?
  • What experience are you intending to offer?
  • What web assets do you currently have?

During this inquisitive phase we can tailor an online strategy specific to our client's business objectives.

Phase Two – Proposal

Upon developing a strong grasp of exactly what our clients are looking for, we take time to put together a concise proposal. Each Wizardworks Web Design proposal is unique and created specifically for each client. We refrain from using standardized boilerplate proposals that generalize needs and merely contain a loose web design strategy.

Once we come to an agreement regarding what the project should entail, Wizardworks is adequately prepared to begin building our collaborative vision. Typically, once we begin we'll need to spend additional time gathering a more rich understanding of the finer points of your company. This process can include (but is not limited to) such things as:

  • Branding Requirements.
  • The most appropriate 'voice' to be present in the written content.
  • Colour Preferences.
  • Technical information such as: server limitations etc.

One of our primary goals is to help our clients create a dialog with their users/customers. Through this collaborative exploration and proposal process, we can agree upon and implement the best methods of communication for your business!

Phase 3 – Information Architecture

It's important for us to understand how the site is organized and how it will flow. By setting out an accurate model of the site's Information Architecture, we can determine the best methods for aligning the goals of all departments with the all-encompassing site goals. The Information Architecture is used during the entire site design process and provides (but is not limited to) the following benefits:

  • The Designers can determine which templates need to be created and where templates can be re-used.
  • The Developers can determine how to organize the file structure.
  • The SEO team can determine the most effective keyword mapping strategy.
  • The Copywriters determine what types of content to write for each page.
  • The Interaction Designers will know what content goes on each page.

Once the Information Architecture is formulated, we will review the document with the client to ensure the website flow is desirable, and that all the required pages exist.

Phase 4 – Site Creation

Once the Information Architecture is in place, our Interaction Designers create wireframes based on the IA to determine the appropriate organization of the content on a page-by-page basis. We will review the wireframes with the client in order to make sure our logic and decision-making process is collaborative and transparent.

Website Design

At this point the designers can begin to create the site design. Again, we ensure the design review process is an open forum with the client. We encourage feedback and can make reasonable modifications as requested. Once we have an outline for the home page, key elements such as navigation, design template and other reusable elements such as the header and footer, the designers begin the creation of the bulk of the website.

SEO Copywriting

Upon completion of the IA document, our SEO team commences keyword research and then maps the appropriate keywords to each page. (Please review here to learn more about our SEO process.) Once the strategic keywords are mapped, our copywriters can begin writing the copy using composition methods that capture the client's style and communication voice. Our copywriters are skilled in SEO, and are focused on creating copy both rich for human consumption and optimized for strategic search engine indexing.

Web and Application Development

Once the design is created, our technology team can begin developing the web pages and applications as needed. We'll ensure the pages work in all browsers and that the applications are robust and optimized effectively.

Website Quality Assurance Testing

Once Wizardworks completes the website, we will subject it to rigorous tests to ensure the quality meets our high standards. This further exemplifies our commitment to providing you with a site you can be proud of and confident in.

Audit and Review Process

At all points during the process, the Wizardworks team is in constant contact with our clients. Frequent auditing of the process and review of the creative direction ensures the designs, content and copy require as little revisiting as possible after the fact. We aim to help our clients launch a website that is fully operational and represents their core values to the fullest extent. We value your input greatly because we're aware you know your business the best. We like to think we know the web pretty well ourselves so an element of mutual trust helps us reach our collective goals together!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. We thrive on the sharing of knowledge and are happy to respond to all reasonable requests.
